What Is Title Case?

Title case is a capitalisation style in which the first letter of most words is capitalised. It is used for the titles of books, articles, films, songs, blog posts, and more. The result looks like this: “The Quick Brown Fox Jumps Over the Lazy Dog.” Notice that small function words like “the” and “Over” follow specific rules depending on which style guide you follow.

Title Case Rules by Style Guide

Title case is not universally defined — different authorities have different rules. The three most commonly cited style guides are:

APA Style (American Psychological Association)

APA title case capitalises the first word of the title, the first word after a colon or dash, and all major words. Words with four or fewer letters that are articles, prepositions, or conjunctions are lowercased unless they are the first word. Example: The Effect of Sleep on Academic Performance: A Review of the Literature.

Chicago Manual of Style

Chicago style is the most permissive. It capitalises the first and last word of the title regardless of part of speech, all “major” words (nouns, verbs, adjectives, adverbs, and subordinating conjunctions), and lowercases articles (a, an, the), coordinating conjunctions (and, but, or, nor, for, so, yet), and prepositions. Example: A Tale of Two Cities.

AP Style (Associated Press)

AP style capitalises all words of four or more letters, including prepositions and conjunctions that are four letters or longer (such as “With” or “From”). This style is widely used in journalism and news writing. Example: Scientists Discover New Species in the Amazon.

Which Words Are Capitalised in Title Case?

As a general rule across most guides, always capitalise:

  • The first and last word of the title
  • Nouns (person, place, thing)
  • Verbs (run, write, discover)
  • Adjectives (large, beautiful, important)
  • Adverbs (quickly, never, always)
  • Subordinating conjunctions (although, because, since, while)

And generally lowercase (unless first or last):

  • Articles: a, an, the
  • Coordinating conjunctions: and, but, or, nor
  • Short prepositions: at, by, for, in, of, on, to, up

When to Use Title Case

Title case is appropriate for blog post headings, article titles, book and film names, product names, email subject lines in marketing communications, H1 and H2 headings in web content, and chapter titles in reports or academic papers. Using a converter ensures you apply the rules consistently across a long document without manually scanning every word.
